Just curious...maybe a stats guru out there can give me an answer...(and I don't know how many ints he threw in that game BTW...so someone will have to
find that as well)...but what was Joe Namath's QB rating in that famous game in Sept back in 1972 between the Colts and Jets...in which Broadway Joe went
15-28 for 496 yds, and six TDs? Personally I believe it to be one of the greatest, if not THE greatest, single game performances in NFL history. Still, barely
completing half of his passes may have lowered his rating significantly.
I ask this because I am very skeptical of Passer Rating to begin with.

I think you get the drift of my main point, however. Namath's game may not have been a 158.3 in terms of Passer Rating, but hard to argue with SIX long TD passes on only 15 completions...and in only 28 attempts. I see so many in game ratings of a QB, where, for instance, he has gone 18-20 for 240 yds and 3 TDs and gets a "perfect" rating. I just think completion percentage may too heavily-weighted in that rating system. |

Provided he didn't throw any interceptions, he had a QB rating equal to 138.3. Though not perfect, VERY respectable.
I have never had a problem with the NFL's QB rating especially since it is based off of historical performances. To simplify, you could always divide the rating by the perfect score to convert it to a "grade". For example, Namath's game would have received an 87.4% (B+). His low completions brought down the score. He had almost 5 drives of "three and out's" worth of incompletions (though I am sure they were not all his fault). I always liked Marino's take on the QB Passer Rating when he said I'm not sure how it works, but I do know it is good if I throw a lot of completions for TD's, and don't get picked off. |

What is AMAZING is that Namath threw for 496 yds, 6 TDs, and his team scored 44 points...and he doesn't get a perfect score.

QB rating definitely has flaws. the 158.3 possible points are equally divided between 4 categories:
comp% td% int% yards/attempt Each category gets you up to 39.575 points. To get a perfect score overall (158.3) you have to get a perfect score in all of the four, which means: comp%: 77.5 % or better td%: 11.875 % or better int%: zero ints yds/att: 12.5 or better to get a zero in a category you have to be worse than: comp% 30% td%: zero TDs int%: 9.5% or worse yds/att: 3 or less So, each category varies from 0 - 39.575 linearly between those numbers. It's really not a good tool to look at one game. For a season or career, imo, the biggest flaw has to do with TDs. For a QB whose coach likes to run in the red zone, compared to one that likes to pass in the red zone. With other stats similar, a guy with even TD/INT will have similar rates. (the slope is slightly different but not much), but really, would you rather have a guy that for a season had 12 TDs and 12 INTs, or one that had 25 of each with the same attempts? Tpically the guy with less TDs probably was on a team that runs in the red zone. Look at Troy Aikman's stats. His QB rating undervalues him because of TD%. Primarily due to Jimmie running Emmitt in the red zone. |

The formula over-penalizes for INTs. IIRC soemone figured out that each INT is equivalent to 100 less yards. Watch when they use the formula for single games.
All it takes is one INT to make one QB drop in rtaing and look worse that his opponent who might not have had an INT. The formula also over-rewards
short-passing QBs IMO. If you throw a lot of shorter stuff your PC% will be higher and your INTs wil be lower than a QB who goes downfield more. These two
factors really kill all the older QBs in the system. Only two things really matter for a QB rtaing IMO: yards per attempt and INT%. A forumula which merely
adjusts YPA for INTs would be the most useul. Each INT should probably be equivalent to losing 30-40 yards.
