What's the buzz for Action 2009? |

Anyone have any guesses as to what changes/improvements Dave has in mind for the 2009 version?

last year when someone asked about the gunners going away, Dave made it sound like expanded special teams were on the way. And this past year while it only
shows names, it does show 11 guys on the field for KO & KR, etc. Having some of the top gunners be more valuable, etc. would be a great improvement to me.

I'd like to see the game provide a "drag and drop" capability to move players around the field and place them in various formations. That way,
you could have an offset-I, double wing, wildcat (with the QB wide out) and various slot configurations on offense. Defensively, you could use a number of
variations such as a 2-4-5 or a gap-8 goalline.
As long as I'm making my wish list...what about the option on kickoff returns to down the ball in the end zone or run it out...and showing uniform numbers on special teams? Just my two cents... Paul |

Wish List Item...
Picking up on both the special teams and video chalkboard topics from above, it'd be great to be able to recognize the PR's and KR's on screen with simply a mouse-over. That way, let's say you're punting, you may want to see who your opponent has deep - may cause you to punt OB etc. Or on Kickoffs, you may want to kick angle to keep it away from the #1 guy if he's dangerous. On the flipside, it sure would be less clumsy for the return team to make a Punt Returner or Kick Returner switch if subbing working the way it does on O or D... |

And two more Wish List Items, unrealted to above:
On boxscore, list 1st downs via Rushing-Passing-Penalty I'm just throwing this out there - maybe in the 2010 version, since 2009 is right around the corner... How about incorporating a "Partial Injuries" concept? Depending on the injury, a player's rating may be downgraded, but he is allowed to play. The Head Coach would need to make a decision to inactivate the player and nurse him back to health, or play the player - albeit slightly downgraded - making the injury linger for some additional time or even risking further damage. |

I'm still hoping for a way to do a quick sub of a DE/LB into the LB position, right now you can only quick sub say Terrel Suggs at DE, you have to go to
the roster screen to move him into the LB position. With so many of these players in the league now (and growing) it'd be nice to have the quick sub
option.
The other option I'd like to see added, is allowing for 8 in the box which is commonly used in the NFL. Right now the game handles this when you select run, i guess playing short or tight also has a bit of impact. What I'm thinking is to allow whatever safety you'd like to play at the line, knowing a Bob Sanders will have more impact than Antoine Bethea. This player has his run rating used (maybe doubled when in the box) against all runs regardless if a run or pass is called with the flip side is his pass rating decreased by 10% on short passes, 30% on medium, and 75% on long (when using man coverage, this player would have to cover someone out of the backfield, or possibly a TE who was not split out). The effect of having 8 in the box would be stronger against the run, better for blitzing (again maybe doubling this players blitz rating when in the box), but more susceptible against the pass, especially longer ones. |

Drag and drop would be an excellent addition, especially if this fully enables more flexibility with the Wildcat formation.
More formation flexibility/creation on both side of the ball.
I would like to see more flexibility in sliding Offensive Line protection. Of course this should come at a price from the less blocked Defensive Lineman. Speaking of which, I would like to see more blitzing options, i.e., actual blitz gap assignments.
I would like to see more pass patterns along with combinations routes (groups of receivers running patterns that compliment each other).
Assignment of motion: who goes into motion, which direction, and where they will be at the snap of the ball. |

I would like to be able to edit who is on your special teams. Some players made a career of just Special Teams (Bill Bates comes to mind). Perhaps a ST
setting could be set on players, so they are your preferred guys on the ST's plays, if they are available.
Also, if shooters do make a comeback, some guys like S and DB's are excellent open field tacklers, and might be better than a WR at the same position. BubbaZ |

Just thinking, if the Eight in the Box thing were adopted, and given that in real life an Offense can physically see that D but in Action it can't, the audible function would then have to get more sophisticated and also easier to use. |

Some good ideas.....
Clearly the "Wildcat" would be fun (with some special plays off it exclusively) and I like that "audible would need to more sophisticated".... Get rid of the ability of thd to get into goal line outside the 4 yared line ( or less).....I mean the QB would surely audible out of a run in the middle if they were all bunched up? I'd hope so but it happened to me...ie I had a dive called and my opponent was in Goal Line outside the 10. Similarly a 2 TE 2 RB 1 WR receiver should be severely disadvantaged on throwing. 8 in a box should be a defense. The defense vs a 2 TE is usually inaccurate ie the CB covers the WR on the "other" side. More later. Jay |

Assignment of motion: who goes into motion, which direction, and where they will be at the snap of the ball. That's a good idea as is the ability to down a kickoff in the endzone. Maybe a return option to go middle, right or left for punts and kickoffs as for the cover team. Or even a reverse option for a return.
How about the QB option picking the direction to run that play. And what about a triple option play for college. |

8 men in the Box? | #11 | ||
|
When they are referring to 8 men in the box, I thought it was just referring to amount of players bunched near the line of scrimmag and usually just a safety that cheats up to help on the run. I would think this would already be covered in the game by calling a "run" defense. |

Funny not that there is anything wrong with any of these suggestions but they are all pretty minor which says a lot about how far the game has come in the last
few years as far as features go.
I would like to see most of the effort continue to go to the formula's that make up the game. |

'08 was an interesting solid simulation in my opinion. The players played, the coach/ user worked the percentages to the best of their ability and the
results unfolded. It wasn't an overly micro managed "guessing game" rising and falling on the strength of a correct key or double cover.

Other items for my Action! PC Footall 2009 wish list:
Bring back career tools...I like the notion of creating fictional players, etc. And my annual suggestion to position the ball on the hashmarks instead of always in the middle of the field. Paul |

I agree with Butch about special teams, having rated gunners would be a nice addition to the game. I also wouldn't mind having 4 distinct special team units (like APBA used to have). Other improvements I'd like to see in 2009:
Overall, APCFB is already the best football sim out there and I'm sure it'll only get better in the future.

How about a smarter and tougher computer manager. I would do more replays if the CM was stronger. It is far too easy to defeat the computer. Please!! Please!!
tougher computer manager.

Release date is March 14th. Lots of real nice additions. New plays, coaching enhancements(human AND computer) and some great interactive coaching options for
special teams, audibles, etc. More layers of strategy, but even easier to play. If you liked the changes from 08 Baseball to 09 Baseball you'll love the
2009 Football Game!
We'll post details in about two weeks. Dave |

Some really good suggestions on this thread. For its worth, heres my wish list in no particular order:
1. Clearer indication that offense is in shotgun 2. Clutch rating for kickers 3. Increased pressure effect on 3rd/4th downs. I know you can't have a stop on every drive, but one of my few criticisms of the game has been that too many 3rd and shorts are converted with a pass. 4. Increased game fatigue. Force teams to have to rest starters more. SAT has this nailed down, Action doesn't (imo) 5. As mentioned several times above: Special team ratings. Ok, its probably not possible to realistically rate EVERY player, but there are a shed load of NFL players that carve careers out without hardly seeing a snap. It would bring a seriously interesting variant to roster building. 6. Expanded use of 'running style'. Bigger splits for in and out running. Example, Reggie Bush and Brandon Jacobs are both 'balanced runners' in the game; no way is Reggie in Jacobs' class between the tackles, but is without doubt better outside. Just that extra 'personality' added to the players. 7. Penalty ratings for individual players. Head butt your screen as Flozell jumps AGAIN!! But for all the above, I thought 08 was a really good game, the best yet. |
