Our 24-team draft league, after starting in 1997 using Diamond Mind, has finally realized that we were feeding a dead horse, and we are making the change to Action! PC Baseball for our 2017 season..
Some managers just don't want to make the switch, so we are looking for new managers.
First, we need managers who are willing to be patient -- with me mostly, because this is my first venture into being commissioner of an Action PC league. There are going to be some commissioner-function things that I need to get used to on the new game. (How it's different from DMB, etc.)
Our rules are a little different. We are not a head-to-head league, though head-to-head play is always encouraged. (Head-to-head is only required in the postseason).
Our usage rules are important to us. Players are capped at 110% of real-life usage in plate appearances, pitching starts and BFPs (for relievers.) To encourage managers to monitor their team's usage totals, we plan to use APC's system of penalizing overused players. (It seems to work quite well)
Our current plan is to use generic lefty-righty batting splits. (This option wasn't available in DMB, but again it appears to work very well in Action PC).
We protect only 12 players from season to season. (We feel this makes it much easier for weaker teams to rebuild more quickly through the draft)
We plan to be a full-DH league. (Every computer manager I've ever seen is double-switch crazy whenever the pitcher can bat. The DH pretty much eliminates that. Besides every league today has the DH except for the National League, right?)
We don't have a salary cap system. We hold an annual draft. In the past we've tried to meet for a live session of 5-6 rounds, but everyone is so busy we've conducted recent drafts via our league forum site. This year we'd like to use the stratdraft page that several have highly recommended.
We'll play a 162-game schedule, but first we need to see how many managers we can recruit.
We have a good core group, with several members who work in the sports media business. (Our original draft was held in the press box at the Texas Rangers ballpark).
Ideally, we'll get the draft going in the second or third week of March and begin the season commensurate with the start of the MLB season.
Let me hear from you if you're interested. Most (not all) of our managers live in the north Texas area, but in past seasons we've had managers from Puerto Rico to Hawaii. We've had lawyers, university professors, major league baseball beat writers, NHL studio hosts, at least one past-president of the BBWAA and, for one memorable season, we even counted Tom Tippett, founder of Diamond Mind, among our manager group (Tom won his division, but his team was eliminated in the first round)
But we're new guys at running an Action! PC Baseball league and we need your help. If you're interested, reply here or send a message (we can do that with Yuku, right?)
