Chapel Hills Golf and Country Club in Douglasville, Georgia was opened in 1992 as an addition to the Canongate Golf Group, founded by Rocky Roquemore. Mr. Roquemore designed the course. In late 2015 Chapel Hills became part of the behemoth ClubCorp USA.
First I must acknowledge that this course would never have been possible without the guidance, direction, encouragement, patience and hands-on help of our samjjones and shimwooley. They taught me everything I needed to know to begin and finish this course as well as everything in between. If any of you have thought about trying your hand at creating a course but doubt your ability, you can do it with a rudimentary knowledge of a photo or paint program and basic math. With those two skills, sam and shim can, and will gladly, lead you through the process from start to finish. I cannot thank them enough for starting me down this path and this will be the first of many courses for me; I have another in the works which will fit nicely with our 1990s seasons and the decade of the 2000s.
I chose Chapel Hills for my first build because it is a home course of mine which I know well and I thought if I could do it justice, I could get the hang of it and do others. Douglasville is just west of Atlanta and the golf course is under a flight path for airplanes taking off or landing at the Atlanta International Airport. There is scarcely a moment on the course where there is not the sound of one or more airplanes in the sky. Since we have the ability to add sounds to courses, I have added airplane sounds on each hole. Until I started building this course for DKS and paying closer attention to the sounds on the course, I had forgotten that you could always hear planes overhead and I think in the game, as in real life, they will become background noise which you will stop noticing unless you think about it.
Chapel Hills is not a long course and it is an easy play for the pros. Three of the par 5s are reachable with a decent drive and the other par 5 is reachable with a very good drive, or some luck with a big bounce off the cart path. Two of the par 4s are drivable, but if you do not stay on the green, your chances of making birdie are often easier with a layup in the fairway and a short second shot to the pin. You should score well with decent driving
The only defense of the course is the greens. Play attention to the greens upon approach shots. The greens are generally fast and if you are on the wrong tier you can have a difficult putt, especially if you are putting down to a lower tier or if you use the new random pin selection and end up with a side slope putt. I did not use arrows because of the new ability to read slopes in 2017 by moving the cursor over the greens and the new Read Green feature while on the green. I could not make the greens play perfectly, but they are representative and the best I could do. Overall the course plays as close to real life as I could make it now. I hope you find it an enjoyable, relaxing round and please continue buying the official releases which DKS offers; these courses would not be possible without the approval and assistance of Ryan.
This has truly been a community effort and it seems I have joined a small community of samjjones, shimwooley and slybelle. Please consider joining the community; they are good people. It really is fun when you understand what you are doing and I am proof that you do not need a technical background to succeed, albeit with a little help from my friends, or make that a lot of help. I am much better and much faster already, and I know I have help waiting when I need it.
I have to thank sam also for providing the initial imagery, coloring the lie layer on the first hole to get me started properly, cutting out the holes for me and for actually reducing some of the files to get the size manageable, and to insure that it was done properly. I have to thank shim also for his help with the new sound possibilities and for creating the exe file, something of which I still have no clue. They both were patient enough to look over and recommend needed changes to many iterations of this course before it became what you see today.
