I know that many of you are heavily into replays of historical seasons in the NFL and AAFC, and many of you have probably already found:
Pro-Football-Reference.com
This is by far the most informative site for info about every season since 1920--and I mean detailed information. For each team, there are records, team and individual stats, rosters, team comparisons, everything but photos.
I studied a lot of the late-1940's and early '50's seasons when I was growing up. If I had to recommend one season to begin playing this era with, I would choose 1950, the first year of consolidation, when the AAFC and the NFL merged. Though the NFL had belittled the upstart AAFC, the Cleveland Browns won it all. You get bits of different approaches to offense--from the Browns' ball control passing attack to the Steeler's single wing. Most teams were running an "Oklahoma" defense, a 5-2 or 5-4. Many teams had full house backfields.
And there was a "slight" different in size. The site averages the heights and weights of all players on all the teams for each season. Last year's Super Bowl champ Giants averaged 6-2 1/2 and 247 pounds. The Steelers of 1950 averaged 6-0 and 208 pounds.
