I remember buying the original version of Statis Pro basketball (before they sold to Avalon Hill) and it came with a newsletter that contained brackets for a
17-team triple elimination tournament. The only problem with the tournament was that it had a couple of byes as I recall.
I've long since lost that newsletter so I thought I would reconstruct a triple elimination tournament to use with the 1973-74 NBA season (which I just received) without the byes (although I suppose there in arguably at least one bye in the later rounds). Here's how I think it will work:
Preliminary Round (purpose is to eliminate one team before triple elimination begins. Losses in this round do not count toward losses in later rounds):
1. Team 17 vs. Team 14
2. Team 16 vs. Team 15
3. Loser 1 vs. Loser 2 (loser is eliminated)
Round 1 (zero loss teams):
4. Winner 1 vs. Team 1
5. Winner 2 vs. Team 2
6. Winner 3 vs. Team 3
7. Team 4 vs. Team 5
8. Team 6 vs. Team 7
9. Team 8 vs. Team 9
10. Team 10 vs. Team 11
11. Team 12 vs. Team 13
Round 2 (zero loss teams):
12. Winner 4 vs. Winner 5
13. Winner 6 vs. Winner 7
14. Winner 8 vs. Winner 9
15. Winner 10 vs. Winner 11
